Hi, my name is Aerin
I'm an Indigenous artist and designer (Timiskaming First Nation) currently based in Batchawana Bay, ON. I started beading several years ago after receiving a set of beads as a birthday gift from my now-husband. What started as a little hobby became something a lot more meaningful over that first year. Beading felt like a way to reconnect not only me, but several generations of my family, to traditional art that hadn't necessarily been passed down. It became a bridge between who I was in name and who I felt in spirit.
A few years into beading, I decided to try my hand at a pair of moccasins. The toe seam was loose and the fur trim was messy, but the beadwork was beautiful. Since then, I've made many more pairs and now my work with a leather needle is just about on-par with my beading needle. Of the two I still enjoy beading the most but the leather work brings a different kind of satisfaction.
Other than beading and leather work, I also do some oil painting. I do most of my painting during the long winter months after Christmas, which seems to be my way of bringing colour into the world when it doesn't have any.
